About
Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
Erectile dysfunction (commonly called ED or impotence)
is a chronic and problematic inability for man to achieve
or maintain an erection. In most cases, this interferes
with the his sexual needs and the needs of his partner.
Most men experience ED to some extent or another by
age 40, and are not psychologically affected by it.
However, many men experience chronic and complete erectile
dysfunction, and others experience partial or brief
erections. Frequent erectile dysfunction can cause both
emotional and relationship problems, and often leads
to lowered self-esteem. Erectile dysfunction has many
causes, both psychological and physiological, most of
which are treatable, and is not a simply a fact of aging.
In 1999 approximately 22 out of every 1000 men in the
United States sought medical attention for ED (according
to the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey). It
is believed that a much greater number of men are seeking
treatment for ED with online pharmacies for privacy
concerns.
Incidence of Erectyle Dysfunction appear to increase
with age. Chronic ED affects about 5% of men in their
40s and 15–25% of men by the age of 65. Transient ED
and inadequate erection affect as many as 50% of men
between the ages of 40 and 70.
Diseases like diabetes, kidney disease, alcoholism
and atherosclerosis may account for as many as 70% of
chronic ED cases and psychological factors like stress,
anxiety, depression may account for 10–20% of cases.
Between 35 and 50% of men with diabetes have some form
of erectile dysfunction.
